【摘要】:Thispracticecoversoutlyingobservationsinsamplesandhowtotestthestatisticalsignificanceofthem.Anoutlyingobservation,or"outlier,"isonethatappearstodeviatemarkedlyfromothermembersofthesampleinwhichitoccurs.Inthisconnection,thefollowingtwoalternativesareofinterest:Anoutlyingobservationmaybemerelyanextrememanifestationoftherandomvariabilityinherentinthedata.Ifthisistrue,thevalueshouldberetainedandprocessedinthesamemannerastheotherobservationsinthesample.Ontheotherhand,anoutlyingobservationmaybetheresultofgrossdeviationfromprescribedexperimentalprocedureoranerrorincalculatingorrecordingthenumericalvalue.Insuchcases,itmaybedesirabletoinstituteaninvestigationtoascertainthereasonfortheaberrantvalue.Theobservationmayevenactuallyberejectedasaresultoftheinvestigation,thoughnotnecessarilyso.Atanyrate,insubsequentdataanalysistheoutlieroroutlierswillberecognizedasprobablybeingfromadifferentpopulationthanthatoftheothersamplevalues.Itisourpurposeheretoprovidestatisticalrulesthatwillleadtheexperimenteralmostunerringlytolookforcausesofoutlierswhentheyreallyexist,andhencetodecidewhetheralternativeabove,isnotthemoreplausiblehypothesistoaccept,ascomparedtoalternative,inorderthatthemostappropriateactioninfurtherdataanalysismaybetaken.Theprocedurescoveredhereinapplyprimarilytothesimplestkindofexperimentaldata,thatis,replicatemeasurementsofsomepropertyofagivenmaterial,orobservationsinasupposedlysinglerandomsample.Nevertheless,thetestssuggesteddocoverawideenoughrangeofcasesinpracticetohavebroadutility.
